I’ve really been enjoying painting these turnip models, something about warm greys gells with me. I get into the rythm of “one more colour” and will paint up till it is time to sleep. I didn’t remember why I had spent so much time churning out Black Templars as a teenager, now I do.

Whelps

I wanted some a fast moving, objective stealing unit – not that I’ve actually ever played Turnip28. This role is filled in Turnip28 by whelps, a light calvery unit that can get an extra move on top of their already excellent 12” movement stat. I could say I chose balck powder to increase their firepower or to fit in with the rest of the 722nd Cake Forks, but no I just thought it looked kinda silly. How would you reload a fusil whilst on a horse?

I also did a toadie to lead these poor fellows.

Modelling Steps

The horse’s mane was trimmed with plastic cutters and then filled in with texture. Then the tail was cut clean off and a greenstuff snake-like tail added. Finally a blob of greenstuff on the snount formed into a helmet shape. The goal was to look more meaty rather than furry.

I think getting rid of that extra band around the horse would have been better. I ended up not colouring it differently so it wouldn’t be noticed.

Painting

I had Steel Legion Drab and thought it’d be a decent colour for a sickly horse.

  1. Shadow Warpaints Fanatic Onyx Skin
  2. Midtone Citadel Steel Legion Drab
  3. Highlight Warpaints Fanatic Amber Skin

I really like the Onyx Skin for the horse but the transition to the yellow of Steel Legion Drab and Amber Skin makes the lighting look really warm and inconsistent with the rider.

See post for painting the jockey.

Conclusion

I really enjoyed painting these. Got some grogs comming next.
